"A History of Waverly and Pioneer Life Along This Part of Hangman Creek"
by Glenn Leitz
In order to afford each other some mutual protection in case of fire, a number of German-American settlers in our area banded together in a mutual cooperative type organization. In 1886 they formed the Mutual German Fire Insurance Company. Some of the local original members were: Hein, Steen, Kienbaum, Mumm, Suksdorf, Jurgens, and Wernz.
In 1889, when Washington became a state, laws required a capitalization of $50,000. This was prohibitive to this little group and they disbanded. By 1891, the idea was still popular locally and the group reorganized.
A feature that was unique about the early day organization was that the policies and business were in the German language and membership was restricted to German-Americans. This requirement lasted until 1918 when membership was open to anyone engaged in agriculture. This company is still in operation today, still as a mutual company. The name has been updated to "Fraternal Beneficial Association."
It is the oldest insurance company of this type operating in the state.
